At the tip of New Jersey about one mile off the coast lies a small
island,
Avalon/Stone Harbor. Hence the phrase, "Cooler by the Mile" was
coined by a
local resident many summers ago.
The island is home to a couple of thousand year-round residents but
swells to 35.000 during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Known for
its beautiful spacious beaches, tall dunes and clean warm Atlantic
Ocean
water, the beach is one of the main attractions of this island
community comprised of multi-million dollar homes, a beautiful beach, town
shopping
area (Stone Harbor) as well as many restaurants and eating
establishments
serving from cheese steaks to freshly caught seafood
specialties and everything in between. The local clubs and taverns offer a
variety of nightlife
with jazz, rock, blues and country musicians. For
the more romantic and
laidback, there are piano bars, coffee and juice
bars - ice cream parlors
and, of course, miniature golf courses
throughout the island.
Avalon/Stone Harbor is perfect for the relaxing, refreshing,
unhurried atmosphere in a safe family
environment. If you want action across the
street is a park consisting
of tennis courts, basketball court with lights, playground, baseball
field, soccer/football field and practice area for tennis
and
basketball. Within 5 miles of the Beachcomber are some of the finest
golf courses in the state. The courses are usually open year round and
include driving ranges and clubhouses. Water sports including water
skiing,
jet skiing, and deep sea fishing, etc. are available right on
the island.
Bike rentals, health clubs, jogging trails, etc. are also
all right on the island.
There's even a bird sanctuary and wild life
preserve located on the island.
You will
not need to leave the island but if you do nearby Atlantic City
(30
minutes by car) of course has casinos, restaurants and
celebrity shows. Cape May (15 minutes by car) is known for
its quaint town shopping and restaurants. For the amusement park
lovers, there is the Wildwood Boardwalk, which is "wild". Rides for
all
ages, boardwalk skill and chance games and traditional boardwalk
eateries and snack foods. For a quieter more relaxed amusement park,
the smaller Ocean City Boardwalk (20 minutes by car) offers
a gentler experience for the young children.
There is
plenty to do or do nothing at all - the choice is yours.
The island of
Avalon/Stone Harbor - "Cooler by the
Mile" is yours
to do with as you please.
